EXHIBITION: 'Promised Land' at dianne tanzer gallery
THE PROMISED LAND | DIANNE TANZER GALLERY | MELBOURNE
20 OCT - 17 NOVEMBER 2012
Becc Orszag's debut solo show with diannetanzer gallery + projects opens today at 3pm.
An exhibition of new drawings by Melbourne artist Becc Orszag. Orszag's work questions the voyeur’s moral ambivalence and role as a witness to their own experience. It’s the potential for upheaval or worse, nothingness that we constantly seem to be on the edge of. Unseen and unspoken, unaware of just how close to that line we are. Through highly detailed small scale drawings Orszag explores unresolved narratives forcing individual observation and interpretation. Figures are removed from their original contexts into dissected, re-imagined, illusionary realms. Gestures are exaggerated, mimicry is amplified and gazes are obscured. The protagonists become anonymous and redundant stripped of power and will. The viewer unable to meet their eye becomes a witness acutely aware of their voyeuristic behaviour.

EXHIBITION: Notfair Primal Mutation
OPENING NIGHT THURSDAY 2ND AUGUST 6-8PM
Becc Orszag is taking part in NotFair, a statellite fair to the Melbourne ArtFair. Searing line work, distended bodies, apocalyptic visions and lyrical poetics combine in a combustible confluence in the second instalment of the rigorously independent art event NotFair. It is a return to the hand, and somewhat anti-digital, creating a mutated discourse across painting, drawing, installation and photography.

Sometimes it just happens. Becc Orszag only finished studying at RMIT last year and it didn’t take long for the commercial galleries to come running. Orszag, wisely, cast around for advice and agreed to join Dianne Tanzer’s stable of artists. (Indeed, she has already appeared in Australian Art Collector, included in a feature on emerging talent in 2011.) She is now preparing for her first commercial gallery solo exhibition.

8 - 31 OCTOBER 2011
OPENING NIGHT 13 OCTOBER 6PM
Becc Orszag’s drawings of eerie mountain scapes and figures engaged in ritualistic actions imply an unexplained history; off-handed notations and seemingly careless markings surround these meticulously rendered scenes. Working from found imagery, Orszag removes figures from their original contexts into dissected, re-imagined, illusionary realms. Gestures are exaggerated, mimicry is amplified and gazes are obscured. The artist explores the de-individualisation of society, voyeurism and the mindless acceptance of what we witness. – Daine Singer

BY ASHLEY CRAWFORD
Catastrophe comes in many forms and Becc Ország seems intent to capture it all in unsparing detail. Specialising in drawing - a form that seems to be increasingly acknowledged among collectors - Ország's work ranges from the remarkably meticulous to the errily obscured. It also ranged from the mayhem of nature - the black billowing clouds of a volcano - to hints of Orwellian oppression.
